The Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT) was founded in 2004 to break boundaries in healthcare. The society promotes policies that support rapid, safe, and cost-effective translation of new technology into medicine. The SBMT globally promotes interdisciplinary research to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with central nervous system diseases regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, gender, or age. The SBMT catalyzes interactions between clinical, biological, physical and engineering sciences. The Society builds transdisciplinary and translational consortia which break down traditional barriers that impede application of new technology to medical problems.<\/p>

Translational research applies cutting edge basic science and advanced technologies to clinical neurosciences. The Society examines emerging disciplines such as nanotechnology, image-guided therapy, stem cell therapy, multi-modality imaging, biophotonics, and biomaterial and tissue engineering for their application to the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation from neurological diseases. The Society seeks to apply these technologies to clinical problems such as brain tumors, stroke, epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson, Alzheimer, multiple sclerosis and ALS), traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, autism, post traumatic stress disorder and other psychiatric illnesses. The Society achieves its goals through meetings, fellowships, publications, international collaborations, consortiums, and policy forums. The SBMT is a nonprofit society which has obtained support from many government agencies (USA, EU and Asia), foundations, and multi-national corporations.\u00a0<\/p>

Babak Kateb started the organization out of the collaboration between NASA\/JPL-USC-Keck School of Medicine and Caltech through an initial meeting at NASA\/JPL attended by 15 scientists from those institutions back in 2003. The meeting was co-organized by Wolfgang Fink (NASA\/JPL), John George (NASA\/JPL), and Babak Kateb (USC-Keck School). Thus, the official color of the organization is Maroon and Gold. This initial think-tank meeting gradually grew into a larger international think-tank convention.<\/p>

In 2004, Babak Kateb, Farzad Massoudi, and Warren Grundfest filled out the necessary legal and tax paperwork with the US IRS and obtained approval from IRS for a 501c6 Non-Profit multidisciplinary and multi-specialty biomedical association. Later it has grown to encompass engineers, scientists, physicians, surgeons, policymakers, healthcare executives, and investors.<\/p>

The initial name of the organization was: International Brain Mapping & Intra-operative Surgical Planning Society (IBMISPS).<\/p>

The name was aimed at the international nature of the organization, its clinical and basic science approach toward brain mapping, and image-guided surgery\/therapeutics.<\/p>

In 2011 Mike Chen, the 9th SBMT president, then President-elect of IBMISPS, proposed a name change for the organization to capture its mission and impact better. Many names were presented, including \u201cInternational Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (ISBMT)\u201d and \u201cSociety for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT).\u201d The members voted to choose Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT) as the new name for the organization in its 8th Annual World Brain Mapping meeting at UCSF in 2011.<\/p>

Since its foundation in 2004, SBMT has relentlessly promoted policies that support the rapid, safe, and cost-effective translation of new and emerging technology into diagnostic and therapeutics.<\/p>

SBMT played a significant role in formulating, planning, and executing President Barak Obama\u2019s BRAIN Initiative.<\/p>

In 2013, SBMT pioneered the G20+ World Brain Mapping & Therapeutic Initiative, renamed Neuroscience20 (Brain, Spine, and Mental Health).
